Name given to a missing value.
The term “unknown” is used for a missing value in a relationship. In an equation like [latex]y = x + 3[/latex], the letters [latex]y[/latex] and [latex]x[/latex] are called variables.

Examples

  • In the equation [latex]2y + 7 = 21[/latex], the unknown is [latex]y[/latex].
  • In the equation 5[latex]{y}^{2}[/latex]= 125, the unknown is [latex]y[/latex].
