Nth Root of a Real Number

In the equation an = A, the real number a that, that, when raised to the power n, is equal to A.

Examples

  • The 4th roots of 81 are 3 and –3, since 34 = 81 and (–3)4 = 81.
  • The square roots of 81 are 9 and –9, since 9[latex]^{2}[/latex] = 81 and (–9)[latex]^{2}[/latex] = 81.
