Today, Charles Lutwidge Dodgson is primarily known by his pseudonym, Lewis Carroll, author of the stories The Adventures of Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass. Dodgson was a novelist, essayist, photographer, and professor of mathematics. He was born on January 27, 1832 in Daresbury, in Cheshire, England, and he died on January 14, 1898 in Guildford.
Following work by Cayley (1821-1895), he worked on the concept of the matrix, enriching it with many new and complementary results.
