Contraction

Contraction

Given two similar figures, $$F$$ and $$F’$$, $$F’$$ is called a contraction of $$F$$ if the similarity ratio $$r$$ of $$F’$$ to $$F$$ is strictly between 0 and 1.

Synonym of reduction.

A contraction (reduction) is the result of a dilation where 0 < k < 1 (k is the scale factor).

Example

In this illustration, figure $$F’$$ is a contraction of figure $$F$$.
