Two figures are similar if one is an enlargement, a reduction or a reproduction of the other.

Symbol

The symbol used to represent the similarity between two figures is “∼”,
which means “is similar to”.

Properties

Two similar figures are figures in which:

  • corresponding angles have the same measure;
  • the ratios of the lengths of their corresponding sides are equal.

The ratio of the length of a segment in the original figure to the length of the corresponding segment in the image is called the ratio of similarity of the two figures.
