Set of the end points of the ordered pairs of a relation.
Notation
The range in a relation \(\Re\) is noted as Range(\(\Re\)) and is read as “range of \(\Re\)“.
Examples
- Consider the relation defined by \(\Re\)(x) = x + 3 in \(\mathbb{N}\) .
The range of this relation is: {3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, …}. - Consider the relation defined by \(\Re\)(x) = x + 5 in \(\mathbb{Z}\) .
The range of this relation is: {…, -5, -4, -3, -2, -1, 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, …}. - Consider the relation of set A toward set B represented by this arrow diagram :
The range of this relation is: {2, 4, 8, 16, 32}.
