Classification of numbers according to certain properties defined by their written form or by the operations defined in them.
A system of numbers is firstly defined according to selected properties : a positional system is defined according to a number’s place value; a binary, octal, decimal, etc., system is defined according to the number of digits (or symbols) used to write the numbers; the classification of complex numbers refers to the properties of the operations that can be defined in each class.
