Solid bounded by a polygon called the base and by at least three triangles called lateral faces that meet at the same point called the apex of the pyramid.
Polyhedron that has any polygon as a base and a lateral surface that is formed by triangles with the same vertex.
A pyramid is also a polyhedron bounded by a pyramidal surface and by a plane that does not pass through the meeting point of the generatrices.
Properties
- This is a rectangular pyramid:
- Points A, E, F, G and H are the vertices of the pyramid.
- Point A is the apex of the pyramid.
- Segments EF, FG, GH and HE are the edges of the base.
- Segments AE, AF, AG and AH are the lateral edges of the pyramid.
- Polygon EFGH is the base of the pyramid.
- The lateral faces are the triangles AEF, AFG, AGH and AHE
- A pyramid is named according to its polygonal base:
- A pyramid with a triangle as a base is a triangular pyramid.
- A pyramid with a square as a base is a square pyramid.
- A pyramid with a rectangle as a base is a rectangular pyramid.
- A pyramid with a hexagon as a base is a hexagonal pyramid.
Example
This is a hexagonal pyramid:
