Factoring

Factoring

Representation of a number as a product of some of its integral divisors.

  • In the operation 6 × 4 = 24, the numbers 6 and 4 are called factors and the term 24 is the product.
  • The term “divisor” refers to a number that divides another number exactly.
    Example: The number 6 is a divisor of 18, because: 18 ÷ 6 = 3

Examples

We can decompose the number 24 into factors in a few different ways.

  • 24 = 3 × 8
  • 24 = 3 × 2 × 4
  • 24 = 2 × 2 × 2 × 3

The last example is a decomposition of the number 24 into prime factors.
