In a division operation, the name given to a number that divides another. The divisor is the second term in the division operation.
Examples
- The divisors of 15 are: div(15) = {1, 3, 5, 15}.
- The divisors of 18 are: div(18) = {1, 2, 3, 6, 9, 18}.
- The divisors of 25 are: div(25) = {1, 5, 25}.
- In the operation 12 ÷ 4 = 3, the number 4 is called the divisor and the number 12 is called the dividend.
- The set of a number’s divisors can be represented by a lattice where the prime divisors determine the direction of the connections:
In this lattice, we identified the prime divisors in the blue squares and primary divisors in blue or orange squares. We can quickly see that 72 has 12 divisors in total.
