Daughter of Theon of Alexandria, commentator on Euclid’s Elements and last director of the Library of Alexandria, Hypatia was the first woman mathematician known in the history of mathematics recognized in her era, in addition to excelling in medicine and philosophy. She wrote a commentary on Arithmetic by Diophantus and Conic sections by Appolonius.
