Equivalent Equations

Equivalent Equations

Equations that have the same solution set.

  • Converting an equation to solve it produces equivalent equations.
  • Systems of equations may also be equivalent if they have the same solution set.

Symbol

The equivalence of equations is indicated by using the logical equivalence symbol “⇔”, which is read “is equivalent to”.

Example

The equations 5x – 6 = 3x + 2 and x = 4 are equivalent equations.
