Conjecture

Conjecture

Statement that we accept as true but that we do not know the truth value of because we have not yet demonstrated or refuted it.

A conjecture can be used as a hypothesis in a demonstration.

In a mathematical demonstration, a conjecture is sometimes called a hypothesis or a postulate.

Example

The Goldbach conjecture states that all even whole numbers greater than 2 can be expressed as the sum of two prime numbers.

  • 4 = 2 + 2
  • 8 = 3 + 5
  • 24 = 11 + 13

This conjecture has still not been demonstrated.
