Examples
- In the sequence 1, 3, 5, 7, … , each number is a term of the sequence.
- In the fraction [latex]\frac{5}{8}[/latex], the numbers 5 and 8 are the terms of the fraction.
- In the ratio [latex]\frac{12}{5}[/latex], the numbers 12 and 5 are the terms of the ratio.
- In the proportion [latex]\frac{24}{8}[/latex] = [latex]\frac{6}{2}[/latex], the four quantities are terms of the proportion.
- In the addition 5 + 12 = 17, the numbers 5 and 12 are the two terms of the addition.
- In the subtraction 15 – 7 = 8, the numbers 15 and 7 are the two terms of the subtraction.
- In the polynomial 3[latex]x^{2}[/latex] – 7x + 12, each of the expressions 3[latex]x^{2}[/latex], 7x and 12 is a term of the polynomial.
