Finite set of all the individuals or units of the same type on which a statistical study is focused.

### Examples

- The population of a city, which is to say the inhabitants of this city.
- The population of a river, which is to say all of the fish in this river.
- The population of a school, which is to say all of the students at this school.

### Historical Note

When the discipline of statistics began, the first studies focused on human populations. The term “*population*” was then maintained to refer to the set of objects on which the statistical study focuses.
