Ordinal Number

Number that makes it possible to determine the position of someone or something in a given context.


Non zero whole-number that indicates the place occupied by an element in a set when the elements are arranged in a certain order.

Notation

To represent an ordinal number, we use a numerical adjective: first, second, third, fourth, etc.

Example

  • Julie finished 5th in the 100-metre race at school.
  • The person in blue is 4th in this line. The person in pink is 11th in this line.

  • The number 18 is the 3rd number in this sequence: 13, 15, 18, 21, 24, 27, 30.
  • The tenth letter of the alphabet is the letter J.
