Population

Finite set of all the individuals or units of the same type on which a statistical study is focused.

Examples

  • The population of a city, which is to say the inhabitants of this city.
  • The population of a river, which is to say all of the fish in this river.
  • The population of a school, which is to say all of the students at this school.

Historical Note

When the discipline of statistics began, the first studies focused on human populations. The term “population” was then maintained to refer to the set of objects on which the statistical study focuses.
