Incompatible Events

Incompatible Events

Events that do not have any common elements and therefore cannot occur at the same time.

We also say that these events are disjoint or mutually exclusive.

Example

In the experiment that consists of rolling a fair die with six faces numbered 1 to 6 and recording the result that appears on the top face, event A: “getting an event result” and event B: “getting an odd result” are incompatible events. They have no elements in common.
