In an exponentiation, the number \(a\) that we raise to a certain power \(n\). In the expression \({a}^{n}\), the number \(a\) is called the base and the number \(n\) is the exponent.

In the expression “7^{²} = 49″, the number 7 is the base of the 2_{nd} power of 7.
