Root of a Polynomial

Root of a Polynomial

Real number that makes the polynomial function associated with the polynomial equal to zero.

Examples

  • Consider the polynomial x2 – 7x + 12.
The numbers 4 and 3 are roots of the polynomial; since, when x = 4 or x = 3, the polynomial is equal to 0.
  • Consider the polynomial 6x2 + 11x – 10.
The numbers \(\frac{2}{3}\) and – \(\frac{5}{2}\) are roots of the polynomial, since when x = \(\frac{2}{3}\) or x– \(\frac{5}{2}\), he polynomial is equal to 0.
